This was a case that presented in Miami, Florida in 2017 at the Jackson Memorial Hospital, the doctors were baffled at this ethical issue not only because the patient’s unconsciousness and DNR tattoo but years before in 2012 there was a similar incident with a 59-year-old man with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, dyslipidemia and hypertension who had the initials D.N.R on his chest but subsequently he wanted to be resuscitated, he had gotten the tattoo when he lost a poker bet to a fellow colleague while he was drunk. Then there is the fact that anyone can get a tattoo whether they are sane or healthy, young or old, joking or serious, there is no strict regulation and standardization for tattoos based on DNR orders, as seen in the 2012 case where the tattoo was done while the individual was inebriated and had lost a bet. Additionally, it would be difficult to find medical tattoos on a person with multiple other tattoos. For a DNR to be legally binding the principles of ethics should be followed. The patient should be in full control of his or her choice and understand completely the risk of survival and possible treatment and make the decision that they do not want to be resuscitated, so they have full autonomy and have give informed consent. The usual conditions for DNR orders are when it will not restart the heart or breathing, when there is no benefit or when the DNR order outweighs the burdens. This means the respect and value of life is evaluated also. It cannot be known if all these principles are followed while getting a tattoo as it is not authorized by a doctor. Persons randomly getting a tattoo do not ponder on these other situations that can occur so provisions are not made which inadvertently would lead to premature death and one of the aim of a doctor is to prolong life so it is not ethical to blindly follow a tattoo. The best way as a patient to ensure that the wishes of DNR or no CPR is followed is to have a medical bracelet or necklace or a wallet card that clearly states name, medical preference and any diseases, allergies and blood type. The DNR order should be clear to the type of resuscitation that is prohibited or to the resuscitation that are allowed, in what conditions and it should be approved by a licensed physician who has had a discussion outlining all the consequences and benefits with or without resuscitation. In the future medical tattoos may be used as a way of treating patients but for this to occur medical tattooing would have to be standardized, meaning they could only be done by medically approved tattoo artists after the DNR or no CPR is approved by a doctor in order to follow the principles of ethics and assigning case number so that there are not forgeries. Thermal insulators Paper To investigate different materials for the most effective thermal insulator for a house. Introduction Heat transfer is the gain and loss of energy. There are three ways in which thermal energy can be transferred:   Conduction   Convection   Radiation Conduction this is when energy travels from molecule to another. When one molecule receives energy it begins to vibrate and hits other molecules and makes them vibrate. And will spread throughout the object. Convection this will only occur in gases and liquids. When heat is applied to the bottom of the substance, it will heat it up. When it heats up, it will rise to the top, forcing colder areas towards the heat source and then they will receive energy and rise to the top, etc. Radiation it travels in waves. When it hits a molecule it makes it vibrate. I will be concentrating on conduction, as this is the main way in which thermal energy is transferred lost from housing. Prediction I think that the best thermal insulator will be the bubble wrap due to the fact that it contains trapped air. Trapped air is a good insulator therefore it takes longer for energy to transfer through gasses because the molecules are further part, a vibrating molecule takes longer to hit into another molecule and make it vibrate. The worst thermal insulator will be something that has compact molecules as it is easy for the vibrations to spread throughout. However due to a lack of time this did not happen. Analysis All the materials are above the control; this gives me the impression that all the materials do have some resistance to the thermal energy that is transferring through the beaker. The graph has a negative correlation which explains, as time goes on the temperature of the water decrease. The papers final result is 68 and plastics is 67, however they both have same line of best fit, which implies to me that their results are very similar. This may well me that they are equally good insulators. My prediction was that the bubble wrap was the best insulator because it contains a lot of trapped air. However after completing the investigation, my prediction proved to be incorrect. The best insulator proved to the paper. My only explanation to this is that when the paper was wrapped round the beaker some air became trapped between the paper and beaker and cause and insulation sufficient enough to keep the temperature of the water higher than the rest. Evaluation Although this experiment went well I felt that it could have been improved, for example. Having the same length and width of each material would have the experiment much better in fairness. Also I was not able to repeat the experiment twice more due to lack of time which severely affected the accuracy of the results and investigation. Finally having a thermometer for making sure the room temp stays the same I think that the method was fine and has no problems of any sort except one: testing the room temp and making sure it stays the same. Conclusion To conclude, this experiment was seemingly fair, however there is a margin for improvement. The paper was the best insulator however I think this was an accident due to the trapped air. I now know that the closer the molecules in an object the better the object is at conducting energy. Which means any thing with trapped air would be a sufficient insulator. This is why they use double glazed windows as an insulator. After giving you a list of every college that superscores the SAT, I'll talk about how you can use this information strategically as you prepare to apply to college. To start, let's briefly review what "superscoring" means. What Is an SAT Superscore? Superscoring is the process by which colleges consider your highest section scores across all the dates you took the SAT. Rather than confining your scores to one particular date, these schools will take your highest section scores, forming the highest possible composite score. On the current SAT, this means taking your highest Math score and your highest Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) score across all test dates. Maybe you scored a stellar 750 on Math on your first SAT, but your Reading and Writing fell into the low 600s. To improve your EBRW score, you spent a few months prepping and managed to bring your EBRW score up 100 points! To your dismay, though, you focused so much on reading comprehension and grammar that you forgot some of your math skills, and your great math score dropped the second time around. If your colleges superscore, then you'd have nothing to worry about! They'd take your original 750 in Math and combine it with your new and improved EBRW score. Even though it took you a couple test sittings to achieve, you'd end up with a strong SAT score in all sections of the test for your college applications. Tips for Applying to Schools That Superscore Superscoring can benefit you after you apply to colleges, but it can also be a helpful strategy as you take the SAT. If you're applying to schools that superscore, you yourself can superscore, in a sense, when you're taking the SAT. What I mean by this is that you can concentrate on building up your highest composite score across test dates rather than trying to achieve it on a single test date. You could prep intensively for one sectioneach time you take the SAT. Of course, this method was a bit more helpful for takers of the old SAT, which had three separate section scores out of 800. The new SAT will combine your Reading and Writing scores, so you'll essentially only have two section scores to "superscore." However, the concept of building up your highest composite score against two or more test dates still applies. How can you use this strategy and become an SAT super-scorer yourself? Read on to find out. How to Be Strategic About Taking the SAT If you use this strategy, then you should start taking the SAT early, perhaps in the spring of your sophomore year or the fall of your junior year, so that you have enough test dates to build up your superscore. If you're one of those students caught in the transition between the old and new SAT, then unfortunately this strategy might not be available to you. If you're retaking the SAT with the new version, then you'll probably have to treat it as its own separate set of scores. And if all the changes get just too confusing, you could always take the ACT! There are a bunch of colleges that superscore the ACT, too. Unless a college explicitly discourages it, don’t worry about taking the SAT too many times, as long as you don’t exceed five or six tests- getting a higher score helps your application a lot more than taking it one too many times hurts it. Plus, unless you're caught between SAT versions, you don’t have to feel anxious about the possibility of retaking the test and getting a lower score than you did previously (unlikely as this is). At the same time, remember- everything in moderation. Even if schools superscore, college admissions officers are still people who might get thrown off if they see huge variations in your scores, especially compared to all of the other candidates. So don’t just skip your Math section completely! In conclusion, you should give your best effort on any SAT you take while also being strategic about building your highest superscore section by section.
